About

The SEO consultant behind SEO Penang

One person doing the work, not an account manager relaying instructions to a team you never meet. That is a deliberate constraint, and it decides how many clients get taken on.

Robin Ooi

An engineer who ended up in search

I trained in Mechatronics Engineering. That is the discipline where mechanical systems, electronics and control software meet, and the habit it leaves you with is a refusal to accept that something works without being able to explain why.

I have spent more than fifteen years in search since then. Early affiliate marketing, where you learn quickly because you are spending your own money. Co-founding a full service agency, where you learn what actually scales and what only looks like it does. And now generative engine optimisation, which is the current version of the same question: what makes a system decide you are the right answer.

Along the way I wrote Your SEO Sucks!, which became an Amazon bestseller. It is not a gentle book. It exists because the industry sells reporting far more often than it sells results, and I got tired of clients arriving with three years of ranking charts and no idea whether any of it had produced revenue.

Why a separate Penang site

I am based in Georgetown. Penang is where I work, where the office is, and where the search market behaves differently enough from Kuala Lumpur that it deserves its own attention.

Most agencies serving Penang are serving it from somewhere else, with a keyword strategy borrowed from a bigger city. That misses what makes this market specific: the export corridor in Bayan Lepas, the medical travel demand from across the region, the tourism economy, and the mainland market in Seberang Perai that gets treated as an afterthought by nearly everyone.

How I work

Engagements are limited on purpose. I do not take two direct competitors in the same Penang category, and I do not take on more clients than I can personally do the thinking for. That caps the business, which is fine. It also means the person you speak to on the consultation is the person doing the work.

The client roster includes MNC and listed company clients across Malaysia and Singapore, alongside owner led businesses here in Penang. I do not publish client names. That is not modesty, it is a condition of the work, and it applies to your business too if we work together.

What I will not do: guarantee rankings, promise revenue figures, build private blog networks, or sell you a retainer when the honest answer is that ads would serve you better this quarter.

Principles

Four things that shape every engagement

PRINCIPLE 01

Revenue is the metric

Rankings are a leading indicator, not an outcome. If a report cannot connect movement to enquiries, it is describing activity rather than progress.

PRINCIPLE 02

No competing clients

Two direct competitors in the same category and market is a conflict that makes both engagements worse. It gets declined, even when the budget is attractive.

PRINCIPLE 03

Built to survive updates

White hat, sustainable, and boring in the ways that matter. Nothing that needs to be quietly undone the next time an algorithm shifts.

PRINCIPLE 04

Client names stay private

No case study is worth breaking a confidentiality expectation. Proof comes from the consultation, where you can ask hard questions directly.

Where else to find the work

This site covers Penang specifically. The national practice, including online reputation management and Google Ads management, lives at robinooi.com.my, which also serves Kuala Lumpur, Johor and Singapore.

If you are in Penang, start here. Run the free scan, read the pricing page so there are no surprises, then book the consultation.
