Should Your Penang Website Be in English or Bahasa Malaysia?

Penang searches in at least four languages and Google treats each one as a separate market. Choosing wrong does not halve your traffic. It usually removes a segment entirely.

The short version

Follow your buyers, not your preference. Export B2B and medical travel run almost entirely in English. Local consumer services in Penang split across English, Bahasa Malaysia and Mandarin, and each one is a separate search market. If you build a second language, build it as properly translated pages with correct hreflang, never as an automatic widget.

Penang searches in several languages at once and Google treats each of them as a separate market with separate competitors and separate results. That means language choice is not a branding decision. It is a decision about which market you are allowed to compete in.

Start with who is searching

The answer differs completely by business type, so start here rather than with a general rule.

Why a second language is not half as much traffic

The intuition is that adding Bahasa Malaysia adds a percentage. That is not how it works.

Each language is a separate result set. If somebody searches a Bahasa Malaysia phrase, they see pages that exist in Bahasa Malaysia. An English page competes badly for that query no matter how good it is, because it is not answering in the language of the question. So the gain from a second language is not incremental. It is access to a market you currently cannot enter.

The reverse is also true, which is the part people miss. Building a poor second language version can cost you in the first language, because duplicated or machine translated pages create confusion about which version should rank for what.

What not to do

Automatic translation widgets

The dropdown that translates the page in the browser produces no separate URL, so there is no page for a search engine to index and no page for an AI assistant to cite. It helps a visitor who has already arrived. It contributes nothing to being found, which is usually the reason people install it.

Machine translation published without review

Machine translation has improved enormously and is a perfectly reasonable starting draft. Published unreviewed, it produces text that is grammatically fine and commercially wrong, because it translates your words rather than the words your customers actually search. Technical terms, product categories and service names are where this breaks most often.

The workflow that works is machine translate, then have a native speaker rewrite headings, titles and the opening of every section, then check that the terms used are the terms people search.

Mixing languages on one page

An English page with a Bahasa Malaysia section inside it competes properly in neither. One page, one language, one declared language attribute in the markup.

The technical part, briefly

If you build multiple languages, four things have to be right.

  1. Separate URLs per language. Subdirectories are the simplest structure for a single country site. Something like /ms/ for Bahasa Malaysia.
  2. Correct hreflang. Every version points to every other version including itself. Use en-MY and ms-MY. This is where most Malaysian multilingual sites break, usually by declaring the pairing in one direction only.
  3. The language attribute set on the page. The lang attribute in the HTML must match what the page is actually written in.
  4. Independent internal linking. Bahasa Malaysia pages should link to Bahasa Malaysia pages. Sending a visitor from the second language back into the English site undoes the work.

Broken hreflang is usually invisible from the front end and quietly expensive. If your site already has multiple languages, this is worth checking before adding anything new. The free scan flags language declaration issues among the on-page fundamentals.

Language in AI answers

There is a newer consideration. AI assistants answer in the language of the question and draw on sources they can read in that language. A Penang business with English content only is far less likely to be named when someone asks a question in Bahasa Malaysia, even if the business is objectively the best answer.

This matters most for local consumer categories, where the language split is real and the query is often conversational. It matters least for export B2B, where the research language is English almost universally. The broader mechanics of being named by AI assistants apply equally in both languages, but the corroborating sources need to exist in the language of the question.

A sensible sequence

Do not build everything at once. Most Penang businesses that go multilingual well do it in this order.

  1. Get the primary language site genuinely good first. A weak site in two languages is a weak site twice.
  2. Translate the five highest value commercial pages only. Services, pricing, contact, and the two pages that already convert best.
  3. Check that the translated pages actually attract impressions over eight to twelve weeks before committing further.
  4. Expand into supporting content only if step three worked.
  5. Add the Google Business Profile in the second language, which is frequently forgotten and is often where the local return actually shows up.

Step three is the one people skip. It is also the only step that tells you whether the investment was correct, and it costs nothing except patience.

If you are unsure which languages your buyers actually search in, that is answerable from data rather than assumption, and it is a reasonable thing to bring to a free consultation.

Questions

Should a Penang business website be in English or Bahasa Malaysia?

Follow your buyers. Export B2B and medical travel run almost entirely in English. Local consumer services in Penang split genuinely across English, Bahasa Malaysia and Mandarin, and each is a separate search market rather than a share of one.

Does Google translate my website automatically for other languages?

Not in a way that helps you get found. Browser translation happens after someone arrives. Without separate indexable URLs per language there is no page for a search engine to rank or an AI assistant to cite.

Is machine translation acceptable for a Malaysian website?

As a first draft, yes. Published without review, no. Machine translation renders your words rather than the words customers search, and it breaks most often on exactly the technical terms, service names and product categories that carry the commercial intent.

What is hreflang and do I need it?

Hreflang tells search engines which language version of a page to show which audience. You need it if you have more than one language. Every version must reference every other version including itself, and declaring the relationship in only one direction is the most common Malaysian implementation error.

Will a Bahasa Malaysia version hurt my English rankings?

Not if it is implemented correctly with separate URLs, proper hreflang and genuinely distinct content. It can hurt if the second version is thin, duplicated or machine translated without review, because that creates ambiguity about which page should rank.
