How to Get Your Business Mentioned by ChatGPT and AI Overviews

AI assistants do not rank you. They decide whether they are confident enough to say your name out loud. Those are different problems with different fixes.

The short version

AI assistants name businesses they can identify with confidence and verify from sources other than that business's own website. Six signals decide it: clean entity data, direct answerable content, third party corroboration, consistency of your details everywhere, recency, and presence in the listicles and roundups that assistants read. Owned content alone is not enough and never has been.

There is a useful shift in framing here. Search engines rank pages. AI assistants decide whether they are confident enough to say a business name out loud in an answer. Those are different problems, and the second one is closer to reputation than to ranking.

An assistant that is not sure about you does not put you in position eleven. It leaves you out completely, and you never find out.

The six signals

1. Entity clarity

Before an assistant can recommend you, it has to know what you are. Not what your homepage headline says. What you are, structurally: a business, of a type, in a place, offering specific things, with contactable details.

That comes from structured data. Organization or LocalBusiness schema with your legal name, address, phone, opening hours, service area and the services you offer. Person schema for the people who represent expertise. Service schema on each service page. Consistent identifiers throughout so the machine can tell these all describe one entity rather than several.

Most Penang business websites have either no structured data or a fragment auto-generated by a plugin that describes the website rather than the business. That is the most common single gap.

2. Directly answerable content

An assistant lifting an answer needs something liftable. Content written as a slow build to a conclusion at the end of a long page is hard to extract from. Content that states the answer plainly and then explains it is easy.

Practically that means question shaped headings, a direct answer in the first two sentences under each, and structure a machine can parse. Tables. Numbered steps. Real FAQ sections. Definitions stated as definitions.

The uncomfortable trade is that this style is less persuasive to a human reader who wants a narrative. Write for extraction where the query is informational, and for persuasion where the visitor has already arrived ready to buy.

3. Third party corroboration

This is the signal people skip and the one that decides most cases.

An assistant will not confidently name a business whose only evidence is that business's own claims about itself. It wants independent sources. Industry directories with real editorial standards. Press coverage. Association memberships. Roundups and listicles compiled by someone else. Reviews on platforms it can read. Mentions in forums and communities where people discuss your category.

These are the sources assistants actually cite. Your website is what confirms the detail once your name is already in the answer. Getting into the answer usually happens somewhere else, and this is why an SEO strategy consisting entirely of publishing on your own domain plateaus.

4. Consistency

Conflicting information reduces confidence. If your address is written three ways across your site, your Google profile and four directories, the assistant has a lower confidence entity and a lower confidence entity gets named less.

Penang is particularly prone to this. Georgetown and George Town. Pulau Pinang and Penang. Sdn Bhd included or omitted. Two phone number formats. Pick one canonical version of every detail and make it identical everywhere, including the ones you do not control but can request corrections to.

5. Recency

Assistants show a strong preference for current information. A page last updated four years ago is a weaker source than one updated last month, even when the content is equally accurate.

This makes refreshing existing strong pages more valuable than most people assume, and often more valuable per hour than publishing new ones. Add new examples, update figures, answer questions that have come up since, and record the review date visibly.

6. Presence in listicles and roundups

When somebody asks an assistant to recommend a category of business, the assistant frequently draws on pages that already compiled such a list. Being included in third party roundups, directories and comparison articles is therefore disproportionately valuable, because you are appearing in exactly the format the question is shaped like.

Getting included is unglamorous work. Find the roundups that already exist for your category, work out who maintains them, and give them a reason to include you. Publish something worth citing. Respond to journalist requests. Contribute genuine expertise where your category is being discussed.

What does not work

  • Adding "AI" to your keywords. There is no AI keyword. There is only clearer information.
  • Writing pages aimed at assistants rather than people. Thin content optimised for extraction gets filtered like any other thin content.
  • Buying mentions on sites that exist to sell mentions. Corroboration works because the source is independent. A source that publishes anything for a fee is not independent, and these sites are increasingly recognisable as a group.
  • Doing it once. Assistants re-evaluate constantly. This is a maintained position, not a completed project.

How to check where you currently stand

Run the mirror test. Open two or three assistants and ask, in the exact words a customer would use, for a recommendation in your category and area. Do not name your company.

Then read the answer honestly. Are you named? Is a competitor? What sources is the answer built from, and have you heard of them?

That last question is usually the most useful. The sources being cited are the surfaces you need to be present on, and they are frequently not the ones people assume. Run the same test in Bahasa Malaysia if your customers search that way, because the answer often differs, for reasons covered in the piece on language choice.

Why this matters more in Penang than most places

Penang sells to people who are not in Penang. Export buyers researching from Europe and Taiwan, patients comparing options from Indonesia, travellers weighing cities. All of them are researching remotely, at a distance, with no local knowledge to fall back on.

Remote research is exactly the situation where an assistant gets used, and where its shortlist becomes the shortlist. This is developed further in why AI search reached Penang before it reached most of Malaysia.

The practical starting point is your own foundations, because none of the six signals work if the site itself cannot be read cleanly. The free scan covers the structured data and answer readiness half in about ten seconds. The corroboration half needs a look at your market, which is what the AI SEO work and the consultation are for.

Questions

How do I get my business mentioned by ChatGPT?

Make your business identifiable through structured data, publish content that answers questions directly enough to quote, and build independent third party sources that corroborate what your site claims. Assistants rarely name a business whose only evidence is its own website.

Does schema markup help with AI search?

Yes, and it is the most commonly missing piece. Organization or LocalBusiness schema tells an assistant what your business is, where it operates and what it offers, in a form that requires no interpretation. Without it the assistant is inferring from prose and inference lowers confidence.

Why does AI recommend my competitor instead of me?

Usually because the competitor has more independent corroboration, not better website copy. Check what sources the AI answer cites. Those surfaces are where the recommendation is actually being formed, and your absence from them is the gap.

How do I check if AI assistants mention my business?

Ask two or three assistants for a recommendation in your category and area, using the exact wording a customer would use, without naming your company. Note whether you appear and which sources the answer draws on. Repeat in each language your customers search in.

Is AI SEO different from normal SEO?

It shares the same foundations and adds three emphases: entity clarity through structured data, content shaped so answers can be extracted directly, and independent off-site corroboration. A site with weak technical fundamentals will not perform in either.
