The short version

Most of the map pack gap in Penang is not competitive strength. It is unfinished profile setup, and it is fixable in an afternoon.

Map pack ranking in Penang is less competitive than it should be. Not because the businesses are weak, but because most of them stopped optimising the moment the listing was verified.

Here is what gets skipped, roughly in order of how much it costs you.

1. Primary category, chosen carelessly

Your primary category is the single strongest factor in what you can rank for. Picking the broadest available option feels safe and is usually wrong. Specific beats broad, because specific categories have less competition and match intent more precisely.

2. Secondary categories, left empty

You can add several. Most Penang profiles have one. Each additional relevant category expands the query set you are eligible for, at no cost and no risk, provided the category genuinely describes something you do.

3. Services and products, never listed

These fields exist and they are almost universally empty in Penang. They allow you to describe individual services with your own text. That text is indexed, it is used for matching, and it is one of the few places you control the wording.

4. The business description, written as a slogan

You get 750 characters. Most profiles use eighty of them on a tagline. Use the space to describe what you do, who you do it for, and which areas you serve, in plain sentences.

5. Photos, uploaded once in 2021

Recency matters and so does volume. Interior, exterior, team, work in progress, products. Real photographs rather than stock, geotagged where practical, added on an ongoing basis rather than in one batch.

6. Hours, including the awkward ones

Special hours for public holidays are a small field with an outsized effect on trust. Malaysia has a lot of public holidays and Penang has its own additions. Getting caught with wrong hours on Thaipusam produces exactly the review you do not want.

7. Questions and answers, left to strangers

Anyone can ask a question on your profile and anyone can answer it. If you do not populate this section with the questions you actually receive, someone else will populate it with a guess.

8. Reviews, requested in bursts

Ten reviews in one week reads as exactly what it is. A steady trickle reads as a functioning business. Build the request into your delivery process at the moment a customer is most satisfied, which is usually not when you send the invoice.

9. Review replies, missing

Reply to all of them. The positive ones briefly, the negative ones carefully and without defensiveness. Prospective customers read the replies more closely than the reviews, because that is where they learn how you behave when something goes wrong.

10. Posts, never used

Profile posts have limited direct ranking weight, and they occupy space in your listing that would otherwise be empty. For a competitive Georgetown category that visual difference matters at the moment of choosing.

11. NAP consistency across directories

Name, address and phone number identical everywhere, down to formatting. Malaysian directories are inconsistent by default, and mismatches split the signals that confirm you are one business rather than several similar ones.

12. Website links that go to the home page

Link category and service entries to the relevant page rather than the home page. A visitor arriving at a specific service is much closer to enquiring than one dropped at the front door.

13. LocalBusiness schema on the website

The profile and the website should corroborate each other. LocalBusiness markup with matching address, hours and phone is what confirms the connection, and it is also what lets AI assistants verify you are a real Penang business. This is where local SEO and AI SEO overlap.

14. Location pages that actually serve a location

A page for Butterworth should read as though written by someone who knows Butterworth. Landmarks, districts, local context, genuine relevance. Template pages with a substituted town name have been discounted for years and they still get sold.

The proximity limit nobody mentions

One honest caveat. Proximity is a dominant map pack factor, and no amount of optimisation moves a Bayan Lepas pin into Tanjung Bungah results. Anyone promising island wide map pack dominance from one location is describing something that does not exist.

What you can do is rank organically for those areas with proper location content, and rank strongly in the map pack for the radius you genuinely serve. That is the realistic goal, and in most Penang categories it is still untaken.

Questions

Related questions

How many Google reviews does a Penang business need?

There is no threshold. What matters is being credible against the businesses you compete with in your radius. If the top three in your category have forty reviews each, eight is a visible gap. Recency and owner replies count for more than raw volume.

Can I have two profiles for the island and the mainland?

Only if you have two genuine staffed locations. A second listing at an address you do not actually operate from risks suspension of both. Serve the mainland with dedicated website content instead.
