Why Your Penang Business Is Not Showing on Google Maps
Nine causes, and only two of them are about competition. The other seven are fixable this week without spending anything.
The short version
Nine causes, and only two involve competition. Check verification status, category selection, address and service area configuration, duplicate listings, suspension, proximity to the searcher, review volume, website connection, and whether you are simply searching from the wrong location. Seven of the nine are fixable without spending anything.

This gets reported as one problem and it is actually nine. Working out which one you have takes about twenty minutes and saves you from fixing something that was never broken.
Start with the most common and work down. The order below is roughly by frequency in Penang.
1. You are searching from your own shop
Deal with this first because it produces a lot of false alarms. Map results are heavily influenced by where the searcher is standing. Searching for your own business while sitting inside it, on a logged in account that has visited your site repeatedly, produces a result nobody else sees.
Test properly. Use an incognito window, and check what a customer two kilometres away would see rather than what you see. If you appear from your desk and vanish from Gurney Drive, you do not have a visibility problem. You have a proximity ceiling, which is number 6 below.
2. The profile is not verified
An unverified profile can exist and still be almost entirely invisible in the map pack. Verification in Malaysia is usually postcard or video, and video verification frequently fails first time because the recording does not show what Google needs: exterior signage, the street, the interior, and proof of management such as keys or a till.
Record it in one continuous take, in daylight, showing the signage and the street name clearly. Most failures are recording failures rather than eligibility failures.
3. The primary category is wrong
This is the highest impact field on the entire profile and the one most often set carelessly. Your primary category largely decides which searches you are eligible for at all. A business listed as "Contractor" when customers search for "kitchen renovation" is competing in the wrong pool entirely.
Pick the primary category that matches the single most valuable thing you want to be found for, then add secondary categories for the rest. The profile checklist covers the other thirteen fields that matter.
4. Address and service area are configured wrong
Two failure patterns here.
If you serve customers at their location and have no premises they visit, you should be a service area business with the address hidden. If you have a real storefront, the address must be visible and must match what appears on your website and in directories, character for character. Inconsistency across sources creates uncertainty, and uncertain listings get shown less.
Penang addresses are a specific problem here because the same location is written many ways. Georgetown or George Town. Pulau Pinang or Penang. Jalan or Lebuh. Pick one form and use it identically everywhere.
5. There is a duplicate listing
Duplicates split your signals. Two listings for one business means reviews, engagement and authority land in two places and neither ranks as well as one combined listing would.
Search your business name plus your address, then your phone number, then old versions of your business name. Duplicates commonly come from a previous owner, an old branch, a web developer who created one during a site build, or an automatic listing generated from directory data. Report duplicates for merging rather than deleting, so the reviews survive.
6. Proximity is limiting you and nothing is wrong
This one is not a fault, and it is the hardest for owners to accept. Proximity to the searcher is one of the strongest factors in map results. A business in Bayan Lepas will not consistently appear for a search made in Tanjung Bungah, no matter how good the profile is, because there are closer businesses in the same category.
You cannot optimise your way out of geography. What you can do is dominate your actual radius, and build genuine location pages for areas you serve so you compete in normal organic results there even when the map pack is out of reach. Penang's geography makes this more pronounced than in KL, which is one of the ways the two markets differ.
7. The profile has been suspended
Suspensions are usually silent. The listing simply stops appearing while still looking normal in your dashboard, or it shows as suspended in a place you do not routinely check.
Common triggers in Malaysia include a virtual office or coworking address, keyword stuffing in the business name field, a category that does not match the actual premises, and rapid edits to core fields in a short period. Reinstatement requires evidence: utility bills, business registration, signage photos, and a clear explanation.
The business name field is worth flagging specifically. Adding keywords to it is common, effective in the short term, and against the rules. It is one of the most frequent causes of Penang suspensions.
8. Reviews are too thin to compete
Reviews influence position and they influence whether anyone clicks once you appear. There is no threshold number. What matters is being credible relative to the businesses you compete with in your radius. If the top three in your category have forty reviews each and you have six, that gap is visible to both the ranking system and the customer.
Recency counts more than volume. Forty reviews with the newest from two years ago reads worse than twelve reviews with three from last month. Owner replies to all of them, including the negative ones, count as well.
9. The website connection is weak or missing
Your profile and your website corroborate each other. If the profile links to a site that does not mention the same address, phone number, business name or service area, the two do not reinforce each other and both are weaker for it.
Add LocalBusiness schema to the website carrying the same details, and make sure the phone number is real text rather than an image. A surprising number of Penang sites publish their phone number only inside a graphic, where nothing can read it.
The twenty minute diagnostic
- Search your category plus your area in incognito, from a location two kilometres away. Are you there?
- Open your profile. Is it verified, and is it live rather than suspended?
- Read your primary category out loud. Does it match what customers actually type?
- Search your business name, your phone number and your address for duplicates.
- Compare your review count and your newest review date against the three businesses above you.
- Check that your address on the profile matches your website exactly, character for character.
Six checks. In most cases one of them produces the answer, and it is usually something that costs nothing to correct.
If the profile side is clean and you are still invisible, the problem has moved to your website. The free scan covers that half. If both look fine and you are still not appearing, it is worth talking it through, because a persistent map problem with clean inputs usually means a suspension or a duplicate that has not surfaced yet.
Questions
Related questions
Why can I see my business on Google Maps but customers cannot?
Because you are searching from your own premises on a logged in account. Map results depend heavily on the searcher's location. Test in incognito from a location a few kilometres away to see what a customer actually sees.
How long does Google Business Profile verification take in Malaysia?
Video verification is typically a few days when it succeeds. Postcard verification takes two to three weeks. Video verification often fails the first time because the recording does not clearly show exterior signage, the street name, the interior and proof of management.
Can I rank in the map pack outside my immediate area?
Consistently, no. Proximity is one of the strongest factors in map results and you cannot optimise past geography. You can compete in normal organic results for other areas by building genuine location pages, which is a separate route to the same customer.
Why did my Google Business Profile get suspended?
Common causes in Malaysia are a virtual office or coworking address, keywords added to the business name field, a primary category that does not match the actual premises, and multiple rapid edits to core fields. Reinstatement requires documentary evidence rather than an appeal message.
Do duplicate listings hurt my Google Maps ranking?
Yes. Duplicates split reviews and engagement signals across two profiles so neither performs as well as a single combined listing. Report duplicates for merging rather than deletion so the existing reviews are preserved.
